Pull open this charming Bamforth "Novelty View Strip Card" from Hastings & St. Leonards-on-Sea and a concertina of seaside memories unfolds — the packed open-air Bathing Pool at St. Leonards, the eerie darkness of St. Clement's Caves, waves crashing in "Rough Sea," the bustling Memorial roundabout backed by East Hill, and the wooded cliffs of Fairlight Glen, all captured in crisp black-and-white photography typical of early-1950s British holiday ephemera. The card was actually mailed on 27 July 1953 from Hastings, Sussex, by a woman named Edith who wrote cheerfully to Lily and Paul at their Oakland, California address: "We are enjoying the sea breezes and sunshine — Frank is away on a tour to Belgium — a weeks tour. We have a card from Nettee they are all well. Love from all." Two George VI-era stamps — a 1d orange and a 2d brown — frank the card at the 3d international rate, and a bold roller cancel reading "POSTAGE ON LETTERS FOR EUROPE 4d" adds graphic punch. Bamforth & Co. of Holmfirth, Yorkshire, famous for their saucy comic cards, also produced these popular accordion-fold novelty souvenir cards throughout the 1940s–1960s.
