Glasgow Scotland Pull-Out Novelty Postcard c1930s Valentine & Sons Thistle

Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom1935Pre-linenGood

A grumpy thistle-man in a tam o'shanter clutches a pennant reading "Wha Daur Meddle Wi' Me" — Scotland's ancient national motto rendered in irresistible comic form — and the bold header promises Some of the Fine Points of Glasgow, a knowing pun on the thistle's spines that would have raised a smile on any 1930s mantelpiece. Lift the thistle figure's flap and a concertina strip of crisp black-and-white photographs tumbles out, published by the legendary Valentine & Sons Ltd. of Dundee and London (series code 62-1): the Royal Exchange on Buchanan Street, the University and the River Kelvin, King George V Bridge over the Clyde, the magnificent Kelvingrove Art Gallery, and St. Enoch Square with its grand Station Hotel. Billy sent this to his friends with a warm note on the back — "Hope you like this wee present for the both of yous" — an endearingly unguarded piece of Glaswegian affection that brings the whole thing to life. The card is a "Printed Paper Mailing Novelty" explicitly passed by the G.P.O. for printed paper rate, a fascinating postal-history footnote about the bureaucratic gymnastics required to mail novelty items cheaply in interwar Britain.
