Baltimore MD 1907 Pull-Out Souvenir Postcard Washington Monument View Patent

Baltimore, Maryland, USA1907Pre-linenFair-Good

From the lofty vantage of Baltimore's Washington Monument — the first completed monument to George Washington in America, finished in 1829 — this panoramic bird's-eye view sweeps across a dense cityscape of brick rowhouses, church spires, and the hulking new steel-framed skyscrapers rising along Charles Street, all captured in rich sepia halftone around 1905–1907. It is far more than a postcard: a tiny brass eyelet-and-clasp fastener (patented December 5th, 1905, No. 806631) secures a concertina leporello strip inside the cover, unfolding to reveal a sequence of Baltimore landmarks — the Confederate Soldiers & Sailors Monument on Mount Royal Avenue, the busy harbour bristling with tall-masted schooners, the imposing Continental Building (then one of Baltimore's tallest skyscrapers), and the Union Trust Co. Building. W.N.M. penned a gracious message inside: "With best wishes. Hope you enjoyed your trip, and saw many new things" — and the card was mailed from College Park, Maryland on October 22, 1907, to Miss Elizabeth in Aberdeen, Maryland, bearing a 2-cent Jamestown Exposition commemorative stamp. Published by the Rotograph Co. of New York City, printed in Germany — a snapshot of the Gilded Age city on the cusp of the automobile era.
