Saturated in the jewel-bright palette of the linen-era, this colorful card invites the viewer to linger at the brick-and-river-stone wishing well nestled beneath a bower of flowering trees at Ramona's Marriage Place in Old Town San Diego — a site steeped in California's romantic Spanish colonial mythology, immortalised by Helen Hunt Jackson's 1884 novel Ramona. A hand-lettered sign leans against the well's worn cap-stone, reading: "Quaff ye the Waters of Ramona's Well / Good Luck they Bring & Secrets Tell / Blest were they by Sandaled Friar / So Drink & Wish for Thy Desire." The Estudillo adobe complex, restored in 1910 and marketed as "Ramona's Marriage Place," became one of Southern California's signature tourist draws in the 1920s–40s, and Herz Post Cards of San Diego produced this card (#728) for the souvenir trade.
