RPPC Postcard 1963 Venice Italy Basilica di San Marco Piazza Real Photo

Venice, Italy1963RPPCGood

The ornate Gothic-Byzantine façade of St. Mark's Basilica dominates the right frame of this striking real-photo postcard, its gilded arches and spires catching the Mediterranean light as mid-century pedestrians stroll the broad stones of the Piazzetta di San Marco — a scene virtually unchanged since the Doge's time. In the middle distance, the famous Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower) with its winged lion of St. Mark stands watch over the Mercerie entrance, while a classic multi-armed iron lamp post anchors the composition. The card was sent by a traveler named H. Wright to a couple — addressed to "Mr. & Mrs. J. L. C." at 640 East Evergreen Ave., Philadelphia — with an irresistibly breezy message: "Marvelous trip. Loved Italy. On our way down the Dalmatian Coast to Greece. Well be home before you know it." The postmark reads 10 VI (June 10), consistent with a summer Grand Tour itinerary, and the card was printed by the Torino-based Fotocelere house, known for high-quality vera fotografia (true photograph) cards of Italian landmarks.
