In the middle distance, the famous Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower) with its winged lion of St. Mark stands watch over the Mercerie entrance, while a classic multi-armed iron lamp post anchors the composition. The card was sent by a traveler named H. Wright to a couple — addressed to "Mr. & Mrs. J. L. C." at 640 East Evergreen Ave., Philadelphia — with an irresistibly breezy message: "Marvelous trip. Loved Italy. On our way down the Dalmatian Coast to Greece. Well be home before you know it." The postmark reads 10 VI (June 10), consistent with a summer Grand Tour itinerary, and the card was printed by the Torino-based Fotocelere house, known for high-quality vera fotografia (true photograph) cards of Italian landmarks.
