Antique & Vintage Postcards

Early automobiles line the broad streets of Temple Square as the soaring granite spires of the Salt Lake Temple pierce a summer sky — this richly hand-colored linen-style postcard, issued by the Union Pacific Railroad as a promotional "Pictorial Post Card," captures the Mormon Temple and Tabernacle at the height of their early-20th-century grandeur. The distinctive oval dome of the Tabernacle anchors the composition's middle ground while the six-towered Temple — forty years in construction and dedicated in 1893 — commands the right. The street scene below teems with period touring cars and delivery vehicles that date the image to the early-to-mid 1920s. The reverse carries the Union Pacific "Overland Route" shield logo and the enticing promotional text: "See beautiful Salt Lake City on the way to Yellowstone–Grand Teton Parks or California via Union Pacific. No additional rail cost." A lovely piece of railroad promotional ephemera that doubles as a Salt Lake City souvenir.
