Postcard Royal York Hotel Toronto Canada Linen 1930s Canadian Pacific Railway

Toronto, Ontario, Canada1935LinenGood

The Royal York Hotel commands the Toronto skyline in this linen-era card from the early 1930s, its limestone façade climbing 26 stories above Front Street while streetcars, period automobiles, and pedestrians animate the street below — a snapshot of a city at the height of its ambitions, built around a hotel that was, at its 1929 opening, the tallest building in the British Empire and the largest hotel on the continent. The warm peach and gold tints of the linen printing give the colossal Canadian Pacific Railway flagship an almost celestial glow against a moody, cloudswept sky. On the back, a warm personal note from someone named "Alain" to a young girl named Katherine thanks her for an Easter card and reports — with avuncular charm — that snow has fallen in Mississippi, weather unusual enough to remark upon from Canada.
