Postcard 1936 Victoria Hospital London Ontario Canada Used King George V Stamp

London, Ontario, Canada1936Pre-linenFair-Good

Ivy-draped brick wings frame the stately central tower of Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, where a manicured lawn, formal flower beds, and a lone park bench evoke the serene institutional confidence of a mid-1930s Canadian teaching hospital — a moment frozen on July 13, 1936, when Helen mailed this card to a woman named Mrs. W.A. Thenger at 601 14th Street in Port Huron, Michigan, scrawling warmly: "Every thing going fine. Hope very hot here. Hope you are feeling better. Helen." The card bears a Canadian 2-cent brown King George V "Medallion" stamp, the workhorse of Depression-era Canadian postage, canceled at London, Ontario. Published by the Photogelatine Engraving Co., Ltd. of Ottawa under the "PECO" imprint with the Dominion Crest mark, this card represents the transition between the White Border and early Linen eras in Canadian postcard production. Victoria Hospital, founded in 1875, was one of Ontario's oldest and most important medical institutions, and period views of it are collected both by postcard enthusiasts and local London, Ontario historians.
