Postcard 1900s Rubens Descent from Cross Antwerp Cathedral Belgium Art Card

Antwerp, Belgium1905Pre-linenFair-Good

A ghostly halftone reproduction of one of the Baroque era's most celebrated masterworks draws the eye across a cascade of muscular limbs, draped linen, and grief-stricken faces — Rubens' monumental Descent from the Cross, painted between 1612 and 1614 and still housed in the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp. The card's cool grey tones do surprising justice to Rubens' dramatic chiaroscuro, with the lifeless body of Christ sliding diagonally down a white shroud held by straining figures on a ladder, while Mary Magdalene kneels below, arms outstretched in anguish. Published by G. Hermans of Anvers (Antwerp) as card no. 213, this is a classic early-1900s Belgian art-reproduction postcard of the kind sold to the wave of cultural tourists who flooded the cathedral before the First World War disrupted European travel entirely.
