Postcard 1920s Casablanca Monument Père de Foucauld Morocco French Braun

Casablanca, Morocco1928Pre-linenGood

Framed by tropical palms and dense canopy, a stone memorial tablet in sun-dappled Casablanca honors one of France's most controversial colonial-era figures — Charles de Foucauld, the aristocratic soldier turned Trappist monk turned desert hermit, whose 1858–1916 life traced an extraordinary arc from Saharan explorer to Catholic martyr, beatified in 2005 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2022. The memorial inscription begins À la mémoire de Charles de Foucauld, set on a classical stepped plinth with flanking pilasters and a bronze laurel wreath, photographed in crisp sepia for this "Collection Maroc" card published by Librairie des Écoles, Casablanca, and printed by the prestigious Braun & Cie of Mulhouse. Foucauld's story captivated early-20th-century French Catholic society; monuments like this one, erected in French Morocco, reflected both colonial piety and the romantic appeal of a nobleman who chose the Sahara over the salons of Paris. The back carries the "Collection Maroc" imprint and a penciled dealer notation, suggesting this card passed through a specialist North Africa collection.
