Postcard 1905 Buller Gorge NZ Tourist Dept Horse Coach Bridge F.T. Series

Buller Gorge, South Island, New Zealand1907Pre-linenGood

A horse-drawn coach loaded with Edwardian tourists rattles across a narrow timber bridge deep in the lush fern-draped wilderness of Buller Gorge, while a lone figure in a dark coat and wide-brimmed hat stands at the bridgehead — perhaps a local guide or coachman waiting his turn. Hand-coloured in rich greens and amber, this early-1900s souvenir from New Zealand's South Island West Coast captures the last golden age of coach travel, just before the motor car arrived to transform the tourist trade. The New Zealand Tourist Department, established in 1901 as one of the world's first government tourism agencies, actively commissioned photographs like this to lure British and Australian visitors to the country's spectacular scenery. The towering kahikatea trunks and dense crown fern visible on both banks are quintessentially West Coast native bush. Series number 2068A on the F.T. Series (a Freeman Thomas imprint) places production firmly in the 1905–1910 window.
