Sunlight filters through mature linden trees along the broad unpaved promenade of Borgs Villastad, the elegant Kneipp spa resort outside Norrköping, Sweden, as elegantly dressed Edwardians stroll past ornate brick villas and a distinctive water tower — a scene of bourgeois leisure at its most refined. Sebastian Kneipp's water-cure movement swept Scandinavia in the 1890s, and Borgs Villastad became one of Sweden's fashionable hydrotherapy destinations, drawing well-heeled patients who believed cold-water walking and herbal wraps could cure almost anything. Local photographer and publisher Hilmer Éen documented the resort in a series of hand-coloured cards that now serve as primary visual records of the vanished spa culture. The undivided back (Brefkort format reading "Denna sida användes endast för adresseringen" — "This side used for address only") firmly dates printing to pre-1907, when Swedish postal regulations still required the entire reverse for address only.
