Postcard 1907 Lanesboro MA Village Street Rotograph Co Undivided Used Mass

Lanesboro, Massachusetts, USA1907Pre-linenGood

A canopy of mature elms arches over the quiet, unpaved Village Street in Lanesboro, Massachusetts, dappling the road in pools of golden afternoon light while a distant clapboard home peeks through the green — a scene so tranquil it feels like the entire Berkshires paused to breathe. Mailed in October 1907 with a 1-cent Franklin stamp, this hand-colored Rotograph card traveled from Dalton to Charlemont, Massachusetts, carrying a message from a writer who signs only initials, telling Frances about "an awful fire Tuesday night" near the Griswold & Adams block, where "Mrs. Griffins" lost her home and the store "was very windy." The Rotograph Company of New York (with German printing origins) was among America's premier early postcard publishers, known for their richly tinted photographic views of small American towns that are now treasured primary-source documents of Edwardian-era New England life. Lanesboro, a small Berkshire County hill town, had perhaps no more picturesque feature than this elm-lined main street.
