Postcard 1942 Naples Italy Maschio Angioino Castle WWII Era Unused

Naples, Italy1942Pre-linenExcellent

Brooding and battle-scarred, the Maschio Angioino — Naples' great Angevin fortress — rises from the waterfront piazza in this stark wartime-era photograph, its massive cylindrical towers unchanged since Charles I of Anjou ordered its construction in 1279; a horse-drawn carriage idles in the foreground, a deliberate nod to timelessness even as Europe was tearing itself apart in 1942. Published under Fascist-era Ministry of Popular Culture authorization (stamp dated 22 August 1942, Anno XXI of the Fascist calendar), this unused card was printed by the prestigious Alterocca house of Terni, one of Italy's finest postcard printers, whose wartime output is increasingly sought by collectors of Fascist-era ephemera and Italian topographical cards alike. The deckle-edged border and rich halftone gravure reproduction give the card a tactile quality rare in this period, and the absence of any message or postage preserves it in mint, archivally pristine condition.
