Columns rise in frozen procession across the sunlit peristyle of the Casa di Marco Olconio — one of Pompeii's grandest excavated townhouses — its impluvium pool still catching imaginary rain two millennia after Vesuvius silenced the household; a small marble figure stands sentinel at lower left as if waiting for an owner named Lucia or a dinner guest named Titus who will never return, while distant Vesuvius itself is just barely discernible through the columned arcade in the background. Published by C. Cotini of Via Chiaia 63, Naples, and numbered N. 26 in their Pompeii archaeological series, this early undivided-back Italian postcard dates from the pre-1905 era when the Italian postal authority still required the entire reverse for the address — meaning any message had to be squeezed onto the image side. The "Cartolina Postale Italiana / Carte Postale d'Italie" bilingual reverse and the elegant cursive "Ac" publisher's device are hallmarks of Cotini's quality printing of the period. The Casa di Marco Olconio (also identified as the House of the Faun in some older numbering systems, though distinct) was a prime stop on the Grand Tour itinerary.
