Postcard 1907 Isola Bella e Superiore Lake Maggiore Italy Color Litho Used

Isola Bella, Lake Maggiore, Italy1907Pre-linenGood

Shimmering above its own reflection in the glass-calm waters of Lake Maggiore, the terraced Baroque palace and gardens of Isola Bella float like a mirage in this hand-tinted early color lithograph — beside it, the smaller Isola Superiore peeks out from the left, with the snow-dusted Alps forming a breathtaking natural backdrop that would have made any 1907 Edwardian traveler reach immediately for their pen. This card was sent by a woman named L. from the lakeside resort town of Stresa on 27 August 1907, postmarked at Baveno and addressed in a flowing German hand to Tilly in Dresden, Saxony. The message, written in period German script, describes a brief but pleasant stop at Domodossola during the journey, wishes the recipient good health, and closes with warm greetings to her and her dear family. The Italian 10-centesimi stamp — a King Victor Emmanuel III definitive — anchors the card firmly in the pre-WWI golden age of European tourism.
