Postcard 1900s RPPC Interior St Nicholas Parish Church Great Bookham Surrey

Great Bookham, Surrey, England1907RPPCGood

Hushed wooden pews stretch toward a chancel arch bathed in soft light from a Gothic tracery window in this evocative real-photo postcard of the interior of St. Nicholas Parish Church, Great Bookham, Surrey — one of England's finest examples of a Norman-to-medieval country church, with origins dating to the 12th century and celebrated for its connection to Jane Austen, who is believed to have worshipped here. The "Stevens Series" RPPC captures the nave arcade with its sturdy Norman pillars, the suspended oil lamp that would have illuminated evening services, and the richly carved wooden rood screen framing the high altar — a scene that has changed remarkably little since the Victorian era. A companion loose photograph (likely a period copy print or dealer reference image) shows a slightly different angle of the same chancel, providing a rare stereo-view comparison of the interior's atmosphere. The back is unused and blank save for the undivided "Address only below" instruction, suggesting a card produced in the early divided-back transitional era, approximately 1902–1910.
