Antique & Vintage Postcards

Two broad-sailed fishing boats — their amber and rust lateen sails catching the last of an Italian afternoon — glide past the cypress-crowned promontory of San Vigilio on Lake Garda in this beautifully hand-tinted postcard mailed in September 1924. The romantic little headland with its ochre villa and medieval-looking chapel walls was already a magnet for northern European travelers seeking the Mediterranean warmth of Italy's largest lake; this card was sent from Toscolano on the western Garda shore, postmarked September 12, 1924, addressed to someone named Bruno in Mödling near Vienna, Austria. The message, written in a fluid German hand, fills every inch of the left panel — a traveler's breathless impressions, scrawled with the urgency of someone who knows their holiday is nearly over.
