Postcard 1920s Certosa di Firenze Il Pozzo di Michelangiolo Monks Italy

Florence (Galluzzo), Italy1920Pre-linenGood

Three white-robed Carthusian monks gather around the ornate Renaissance well — "Il Pozzo di Michelangiolo" — in the great cloister of the Certosa di Galluzzo (Certosa di Firenze), just south of Florence, in this evocative early-twentieth-century real-photo postcard. The well, traditionally attributed to Michelangelo's influence though scholars debate its provenance, is crowned with an extraordinary wrought-iron canopy of intertwining vines and a pulley wheel, rising between two stone columns. The monks' long white habits glow against the rough stone courtyard; the leftmost figure turns with an almost conspiratorial half-smile, caught candidly by the photographer. Founded in 1341 by the Florentine banker Niccolò Acciaiuoli, the Certosa housed Carthusian monks until 1958 when the order departed and Cistercians arrived. This card, bearing catalog number 31778 on the reverse, was produced by an unidentified publisher whose ornate cartouche (a stylized fleur-de-lis or crest device) appears centered on the back — a mark consistent with Florentine souvenir publishers of the 1910s–1930s.
