Postcard 1930s Montecatini Terme Stabilimento Tettuccio Interior Italy B&W

Montecatini Terme, Italy1937Pre-linenGood

Elegantly dressed Italians and tourists promenade through the luminous marble hall of the Stabilimento Tettuccio at Montecatini Terme in this atmospheric black-and-white postcard from the 1930s — an era when this grand Tuscan spa town was at the absolute zenith of its glamour. Attendants in striped uniforms dispense the famous mineral waters from ornate marble kiosks while visitors in summer whites and felt hats stroll the black-and-white geometric floor beneath enormous allegorical mural paintings. Montecatini Terme, long favored by Italian nobility, artists, and politicians (Puccini, Verdi, and Mussolini all took the waters here), saw the Tettuccio completely rebuilt in a sumptuous neo-classical style between 1927 and 1935 — the very building depicted here in its newly inaugurated splendor. The detailed close-up reveals the murals' monumental figurative style, consistent with the Fascist-era aesthetic patronage of the period. A wonderful social document of Italian leisure culture between the wars.
