Postcard 1930s Ragusa Ibla Sicily Portale di S. Giorgio Gothic Portal Italy

Ragusa Ibla, Sicily, Italy1930Pre-linenGood

From the earthquake-rebuilt Baroque hilltown of Ragusa Ibla in southeastern Sicily, this hauntingly beautiful pre-linen postcard immortalizes the Gothic-Norman portal of the old Chiesa di San Giorgio — a graceful pointed arch richly encrusted with carved voussoirs, a tympanum relief of Saint George and the dragon rearing above the doorway, and two diamond-shaped heraldic reliefs flanking a crowned cross finial, all that survived the catastrophic Val di Noto earthquake of 1693 and preserved amid the romantic ruins of the original medieval church. The jagged broken wall to the right tells the story of destruction; lush tropical vegetation and an iron fence guard the ancient stones below. Published by the distinguished Stabilimento Grafico Cesare Capello of Milan, this card belongs to a serious architectural documentation series that captured Sicily's extraordinary Norman-Baroque heritage in the interwar years, and it was never sent — leaving it in crisp, collectible condition for the scholar or Sicily enthusiast today.
