Postcard c1905 Hamburg Fleet Deichstrasse Germany A. Sternberg Unused

Hamburg, Germany1905Pre-linenGood

A forest of medieval gabled warehouses crowds the edge of the Nikolaifleet canal along Deichstrasse in this evocative early-century Hamburg postcard — shop signs for Conrad Müller's Buchdruckerei, Eckstein & Söhne, Kolbe & Biehl, and Ernst Heusch (Cigarettenlager) legible across the half-timbered facades, making this as much a commercial directory as a cityscape. The graceful needle spire of St. Nikolai church pierces the sky at left, a landmark that would be gutted by Allied bombing in 1943 and preserved today as a war memorial. This stretch of Deichstrasse, one of Hamburg's oldest surviving streetscapes, is captured here in its pre-WWI commercial prime. The card was published by A. Sternberg, Hamburg 3, catalogue number 16007, with the back carrying the standard German "Nachdruck verboten" (reproduction forbidden) notice and a publisher's star-and-globe logo. The divided back is blank — never used, never posted — preserving the card in exceptional condition. A fine document of the Hanseatic mercantile world before two world wars reshaped the city.
