Postcard c1905 RPPC Royal Court Dress Woman Tiara Ermine Train Jennie

Milton, California, USA1908RPPCFair-Good

Gowned in ivory silk with sequined trim and a sweeping ermine-bordered velvet train pooled at her feet, this young woman — photographed in a formal studio portrait — wears a diamond tiara and the full regalia of a British-style court presentation dress, her gaze directed at the camera with composed self-possession. Sent by a friend named Lourina to a Miss Jennie in Milton, California, the message on the divided back reads: "From your friend Lourina Jeffery. I will thank you with all my heart. This is Mrs. Green's picture." — a tantalising personal detail suggesting the subject is "Mrs. Green," a local woman of some social standing photographed in her finest for what may have been a formal occasion, theatrical performance, or society debut. The real-photo postcard format (no publisher imprint, photographic paper stock) dates the card to approximately 1905–1915. The address side is hand-addressed to "Miss Jennie Bund[—], Milton, Cal." Milton is a small town in Calaveras County, California, lending a delightful contrast between Gold Country small-town life and the grandeur of court dress. A charming window into Edwardian-era social aspiration and female friendship.
