Postcard 1903 Wiesbaden Marktplatz Royal Palace Germany Used UDB Stamp

Wiesbaden, Germany1903Pre-linenGood

Sent from the elegant spa city of Wiesbaden in the late summer of 1903, this early undivided-back card captures the sweeping Marktplatz with the neo-Gothic Königliches Schloss, the Töchterschule girls' school, the Evangelische Marktkirche with its soaring spire looming dramatically at right, and the Rathaus — a remarkably complete civic portrait of Wilhelmine Germany's prosperous urban life, horse-drawn vehicles and strolling figures animating the square below bare-limbed trees; addressed to a Mr. Hopp— at "Buddleford," Exeter Road, Teignmouth, South Devon, England, postmarked Wiesbaden 27.8.03 and franked with a 10-Pfennig Germania stamp, the card also bears a faint violet hotel rubber stamp reading "Hôtel [Vier] Jahreszeiten / Quatre Saisons / Forn[?] / Wiesbaden" — a charming snapshot of Edwardian-era cross-Channel travel, when well-to-do English visitors flocked to the German spas.
