Postcard Chrome Halekulani Hotel Waikiki Honolulu Hawaii 1964 Air Mail

Honolulu (Waikiki), Hawaii, USA1964ChromeGood

Postmarked Honolulu, April 25, 1964 — just five years after Hawaiian statehood — this vivid chrome-era postcard captures the legendary Halekulani Hotel on Waikiki Beach wreathed in swaying coconut palms, its gracious two-story main building framed by leaning trunks against a deep tropical-blue sky, a vintage early-1950s automobile parked in the dappled shade at left. The Halekulani ("House Befitting Heaven") had been Waikiki's most quietly distinguished address since 1917, beloved by Somerset Maugham and countless others who preferred its understated elegance to flashier beach rivals; by 1964 the bungalow complex shown here was nearing the end of its original incarnation before later redevelopment. The reverse is a collector's delight: someone — apparently a traveler named Mike, writing to a Miss Cecelia at a Bloomfield, New Jersey address — has delivered what must rank among the more dramatically minimal postcard messages on record: "No, No, a thousand times No!" — three lines in bold cursive, the exclamation point underscored for maximum effect. The card traveled by U.S. Air Mail with a 6-cent Eagle airmail stamp, machine-cancelled with the American Cancer Society's "Strike Back at Cancer" slogan cancel.
