Antique & Vintage Postcards

In the electric night of the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, the Federal and States Buildings erupt in a symphony of color — three soaring pylons blazing violet and crimson against a deep teal sky, their reflections shimmering in the lagoon below in wavering pools of rose and gold. This linen-era card captures the Fair's legendary light show at its most dramatic, the Art Deco towers flanked by illuminated mural panels glowing amber and green, the whole scene reflected perfectly in still water to create a doubled vision of the future. The back tells us this was "one of the most magnificent light and color effects of the World's Fair," holding visitors "spellbound." Mailed on September 22 from Chicago itself, this card traveled from the Fair to Belle Plaine, Iowa, where Walter and his wife received it from a writer signed "Burdette" — a firsthand souvenir of a once-in-a-generation event.
