"It was only a dream" — the gilded Gothic lettering of Es war nur ein Traum! arches over a hand-tinted fantasy scene in which a young woman in white lace reclines asleep among tropical palms and mossy stones, while above her in a circular vignette a priest blesses a kneeling couple at an altar, the dream of marriage hovering just beyond her reach. The chromolithographic tinting over the underlying photograph is lushly executed — the palms rendered in cool greens, the woman's gown in ivory and blush, the stone wall behind in warm amber and grey — giving the card the layered, painterly quality that made Edwardian romantic fantasy postcards among the most technically ambitious of their era. The publisher's initials J.W.W. appear at lower left, a mark associated with Johann Winsch or similar German-American publishers active c.1900–1912 who specialized in sentimental and allegorical fantasy subjects. A small cross above the wedding vignette adds a religious dimension to the romantic longing. The card is unused but shows light edge wear consistent with age; the colors remain vibrant and the embossed gold lettering retains its luster.
