Postcard Ichtham Mote Kent England Salmon Series Art 1900s Used

Ightham, Kent, England1910Pre-linenGood

Swans glide through the still moat waters below the crenellated tower of Ightham Mote, one of England's most complete medieval manor houses, captured here in a warm golden-toned art rendering by C. Goodchild for the Salmon Series — a postcard that doubles as a tiny watercolor. The card was sent on August 3rd from a grandmother to her grandchild, addressed to a Miss Agnes (surname withheld) at 404 Greenwood Blvd, Evanston, Illinois. She writes with tender urgency: "My dearest child, Evan is I hear another Grandchild — your my dearest, aren't she? Swung pretty. We saw this lovely place on Friday and have yet gotten back from that trip — yesterday. My dearest…" The unfinished warmth of the message, the idyllic English manor, and the transatlantic family news make this a charming human document. Ightham Mote in Sevenoaks, Kent dates to the 14th century and is now a National Trust property; this card captures it in its privately-held Edwardian heyday.
