Postcard 1900s Heidelberg Schlosshof Castle Courtyard Etching Edm von König

Heidelberg, Germany1902Pre-linenGood

An atmospheric pen-and-ink etching style postcard captures the grand courtyard of Heidelberg Castle — the Schlosshof — with haunting precision: the ornate Otto-Heinrich-Bau facade rises on the left, a round tower anchors the centre, and the ruined columned loggia frames the right foreground, its weathered sandstone blocks rendered in loving cross-hatch detail. Heidelberg Castle, partially destroyed by French troops in 1689 and again by lightning in 1764, had by the late 19th century become Germany's most romantic ruin, drawing artists, poets, and Grand Tour travellers in droves. This card, published by the respected Heidelberg firm of Edm. von König, reproduces an etching signed in the upper left by the artist — its fine-line technique evoking the golden age of German travel illustration. The undivided back indicates a pre-1905 production date, when senders had to crowd any message onto the picture side.
