Postcard 1900s Lac Léman La France Paddle Steamer Lake Geneva Switzerland

Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), Switzerland1901Pre-linenFair-Good

Slicing through the silver-grey waters of Lake Geneva with her paddlewheels churning a foamy wake, the SS France steams proudly against a backdrop of snow-crowned Alpine peaks — her name clearly lettered on the hull amidships, her single funnel trailing a dark plume into a hazy sky. The France was one of the grand Belle Époque paddle steamers operated by the Compagnie Générale de Navigation sur le lac Léman (CGN), vessels that carried royalty, writers, and fashionable tourists along Switzerland's most glamorous lakeside resorts from Lausanne to Geneva. Published by the prestigious Geneva firm of Charnaux Frères & Co. (catalogue no. 664.1), noted for their high-quality collotype and halftone lake and mountain views, this undivided-back card dates to approximately 1899–1904. The silvery tonal range of the image — a hallmark of Charnaux's photographic printing — gives the steamer an almost ghostly grandeur.
