Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bathed in warm amber and rose tones of expert hand-colouring, the original Zürich Tonhalle rises magnificently from the lakeside gardens — its twin campanile towers flanking a grand central dome topped with a golden figure, the sweeping Romanesque-revival arches of its façade reflected in the busy foreground of trees and what appears to be a partially covered market or promenade structure. This is the beloved first Tonhalle, opened in 1895 and demolished in 1939, making postcards of it precious survivors of a vanished landmark in Switzerland's musical capital. Published by the celebrated Photoglob Co. of Zürich (catalogue no. 2605), whose chromolithographic and colour-halftone cards are among the most sought-after Swiss tourist views of the era, this undivided-back card dates to approximately 1900–1904. The Tonhalle was home to the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich, whose conductor at the time included Friedrich Hegar — the hall rang with premieres and European musical luminaries every season.
