Postcard Central City Colorado Chrome Aerial View Town 1950s Richest Mile

Central City, Colorado, USA1955ChromeExcellent

Rooftops and red-brick storefronts cascade down terraced hillsides in this vivid mid-century chrome aerial view of Central City, Colorado — once proclaimed the "Richest Square Mile on Earth" after gold was struck here in 1859. The Teller House hotel sign is legible among the densely packed commercial district in the lower left, while modest Victorian homes climb the bare, mine-dump-scarred slopes toward a broad mountain backdrop under dramatic cumulus clouds. The orange-tinged earth between buildings betrays a century of hard-rock mining that shaped every contour of this Gilpin County mountain town, elevation 8,496 feet. Published in vivid "Micro-Color" process by Milwaukee's W. A. Krueger Co., the card captures Central City at a quiet mid-century moment — gambling was still illegal, the opera house was being lovingly restored, and tourism was just beginning to replace the last echoes of the mining boom.
