Postcard 1900s Houses of Parliament London Thames Steamboat Undivided Back

London, England, United Kingdom1900Pre-linenGood

Viewed across the broad sweep of the Thames with a steam launch cutting a white wake in the foreground, the Houses of Parliament — Westminster Palace in all its Victorian Gothic grandeur — stretch the full width of this early hand-tinted chromolithographic postcard, with Big Ben's clock tower anchoring the right and the Victoria Tower rising on the left against a soft blue sky scattered with painted clouds. The composition is a near-perfect exemplar of the Edwardian souvenir postcard: authoritative, panoramic, gently romanticized through careful tinting that warms the stone to a rich golden amber while keeping the river a cool steel-blue. Published by H.M. & Co., London, Series 1 — printed in Prussia, as was standard for quality British postcard production before the Great War — this undivided-back card (address side only, no message space) dates to before the 1902 British postal regulation change that permitted divided backs, making it a genuine Victorian or very early Edwardian artifact. The postage rate box in the upper right corner notes "Inland ½d / Abroad 1d," a precise philatelic dating marker consistent with the pre-1902 British postcard rate structure, placing production firmly in the late 1890s to 1902 window.
