Postcard 1900 Papendrecht Netherlands Veerstoep Street View Dutch UDB

Papendrecht, Netherlands1900Pre-linenGood

A solitary figure in traditional Dutch dress — dark skirt, white apron, distinctive regional cap — stands at the edge of a quiet unpaved street in Papendrecht, a small polder village on the Noord river south of Dordrecht, caught in a moment of unhurried village life around the turn of the twentieth century. Low whitewashed brick cottages line the Veerstoep (the ferry landing road), their stepped chimneys and shuttered windows unchanged for generations, while a group of men converse further along the lane beneath bare poplar trees. Published by the well-known Dutch series house A.G.V.D. as card no. 232, this photomechanical print on an undivided-back Briefkaart (Dutch: postcard) captures a slice of pre-industrial South Holland that would be dramatically transformed by twentieth-century development. The back, in Dutch and French bilingual format per Universal Postal Union convention, was never written on, leaving the card in pristine archival condition.
