Postcard 1900s Milano Italy Fontana di Sant'Antonio Il Santo RPPC Pace & C

Milan, Italy1925RPPCGood

A striking bronze figure leans forward in supplication, robes falling in heavy folds, wrists bound by a chain — this is the Sant'Antonio fountain statue photographed in early-twentieth-century Milan, its outstretched palms offering an almost pleading gesture toward the viewer. A small bouquet of fresh flowers has been laid at the base of the rough stone plinth, a tender act of devotion that anchors the image in everyday Milanese street life. Published by Pace & C. of Milan as a real-photograph postcard, the card captures the statue in front of a weathered stucco building whose faded inscription above a barred window reads fragments of a street address. This fountain and its devotional statue stood in one of Milan's working-class inner neighborhoods, and the real-photo format — sharp, silver-gelatin detail — gives this card an immediacy that lithographic cards of the era simply cannot match.
