Postcard 1900s Zurich Bahnhof & Landesmuseum Tram Swiss National Museum

Zürich, Switzerland1903Pre-linenGood

Two electric trams glide along the Limmat quayside as horse-drawn carts cross the bridge in the opposite direction — a perfect freeze-frame of Zürich in technological transition, with the soaring glass barrel vault of the Hauptbahnhof at left and the fairy-tale turrets of the Swiss National Museum (Schweizerisches Landesmuseum) at right, both rendered in luminous hand-color. The Landesmuseum, completed in 1898 in a romantic historicist style blending Swiss castle and cathedral elements, had been open for barely a decade when this card was printed, and the tram lines visible here are among the city's earliest electric routes. Published by Edition Photoclub Co., Zürich, under catalog number 849, this undivided-back card is a classic of early Swiss topographic postcard publishing — crisp, beautifully colored, and rich with period street detail including a gas lamp, pedestrians in Edwardian dress, and the Limmat's reflective surface.
