Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bathed in diffuse light filtering through a blue-paned skylight, the Frühstückssaal — breakfast hall — of the legendary Hotel Schwarzer Bock in Wiesbaden gleams with old-world grandeur: towering veined-marble columns, ornate gold chandeliers, crisp linen-draped tables set with delicate china, and lush tropical plants spilling into the aisle between Oriental runners. One of Germany's oldest hotels, the Schwarzer Bock traces its roots to 1486 and was a favourite haunt of Goethe, Dostoevsky, and Wagner — the same marble columns and skylit hall they might have breakfasted beneath. The owner at time of printing was Th. Schäfer, with 310 beds and telephone Fernsprecher 59751. Printed by Vitacolor (no. 7981) with a "Die 6 vom Rhein" quality mark, this unused chrome-era card is a pristine slice of postwar West German luxury hospitality.
