Impossibly picturesque even by Devon standards, Clovelly's famous High Street tumbles down a near-vertical cobbled lane in this vivid early Edwardian hand-coloured postcard — donkeys laden with panniers picking their way uphill while a handler guides another beast past iron railings and ivy-smothered cottage walls, the "New Inn" sign just visible in the middle distance. Clovelly, a privately owned village on the North Devon coast, was already a celebrated tourist destination by the 1900s, its car-free, donkey-served streets one of England's most photographed spectacles. Numbered 227 in a regional series matching the Lynmouth card (no. 235, also in this collection), this card shares the same undivided-back format and colourisation style, pointing to the same publisher and a date of c.1902–1904. The reverse is entirely unused and pristine. The donkeys — the village's only means of freight transport until very recently — give this image an especially timeless quality.
