Postcard 1902 Chester God's Providence House England Undivided Back Unused

Chester, Cheshire, England1903Pre-linenExcellent

Standing defiantly on Watergate Street in Chester with the inscription "God's Providence Is Mine Inheritance" carved beneath its ornate Jacobean-revival façade, God's Providence House is captured here in glowing chromolithographic color on an early undivided-back postcard — the storefront of John Harker & Co., warehousemen and manufacturers, visible at street level below the elaborately patterned plasterwork panels; this remarkable Chester landmark, rebuilt in 1862 and long associated with the legend that it was the only house spared during a devastating 17th-century plague, is shown in pristine, unposted condition on a "Picture Post Card" with the transitional split-back format indicating a date of c.1902–1904, the stamp box noting ½d inland and 1d foreign rates.
