Postcard 1900s Monte Cassino Abbey Cloister Bramante Italy Alterocca

Monte Cassino, Italy1905Pre-linenGood

A robed monk stands in contemplative silence beneath the great barrel-vaulted arcade of the Chiostro del Priore at Monte Cassino, one of Christendom's most storied Benedictine abbeys — this atmospheric pre-linen card, published by Alterocca of Terni and captioned "Un saluto da Montecassino," freezes a moment of monastic daily life before the abbey was catastrophically destroyed in the Allied bombing of February 1944, making pre-war imagery of its cloisters particularly resonant for collectors of Italian religious and architectural ephemera. The courtyard opens onto a colonnaded loggia and a domed church beyond, the stonework rendered in rich silver-grey halftone typical of Alterocca's high-quality photographic printing of the early 1900s; a wellhead and ornamental fountain punctuate the sunlit piazza. The reverse is undivided-back style transitioning to divided — blank, never posted — printed in three languages (Carte Postale / Postkarte / Post Card), confirming an Edwardian-era issue likely ca. 1902–1910.
