Postcard 1953 Linen Basket Weaving Beach Ensenada Baja California Mexico

Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico1953LinenGood

Under a rustic palapa of dried palm fronds on the sun-baked sands of Ensenada, four craftsmen sit cross-legged weaving enormous baskets—one nearly the size of a barrel—from split reeds while brilliantly colored finished pieces hang overhead like lanterns in a marketplace. This vivid linen-era color card captures a living cottage industry that thrived along Baja California's tourist beach strip in the early 1950s, when cruise passengers and road-trippers from San Diego would stop to watch artisans at work and carry home a souvenir. On September 11, 1953, someone named Clifford mailed this card to Edgar in Rochester, New York, writing warmly: "Greetings from Mexico. A year ago this AM we left Rochester for home. Best regards to all the family, you too Eddie." The 10-centavo green Correos Mexico stamp anchors the upper right; a faint blue circular cancellation ties it to its journey north.
