Postcard 1913 Graz Schlossberg Austria Pre-WWI K.u.K. 10 Heller Stamp Mailed

Graz, Austria1916Pre-linenGood

Perched dramatically above the city on a forested limestone crag, the ancient Schlossberg fortress of Graz dominates this exquisitely hand-tinted pre-WWI Austrian postcard — the funicular railway track cutting a steep diagonal through the dense greenery below, the Clock Tower's red cupola just visible among the trees, and the fortress walls bathed in warm afternoon light that the colorist has rendered with surprising delicacy. Sent from Graz in 1913 — just one year before the world these correspondents knew would be shattered by war — the card was dispatched by a sender named Georg to a young woman named Berta in Judenburg, Upper Styria, carrying a brief message of warm greetings. The Imperial and Royal Austrian stamp (Kaiserliche Königliche Österreichische Post), a 10-Heller Crown issue still bearing the symbols of a Habsburg empire months from its collapse, is a collectible artifact in its own right, here tied with a crisp Graz circular date stamp.
