Postcard 1903 Paris Louvre Pavillon de Rohan France Used NY Boddington

Paris, France / Ollioules, Var, France1903Pre-linenFair-Good

Horses clatter across the cobblestones before the Louvre's Pavillon de Rohan in this evocative early French carte postale, sent in October 1903 by a flower-bulb syndicate representative named A. Bernard in the sunny Var region of Provence — addressed to the firm of Clucas & Boddington Co. at 812 Greenwich Street, New York, in a deft business missive requesting the return of a draft "for acceptance as it was agreed when contracted." The image, a crisp photographic print vignette showing pedestrians, open carriages, and gas lamps on the Place du Palais-Royal, captures Paris at the height of the Belle Époque mere years before the automobile would transform its streets. The card bears a République Française 10-centime Mouchon stamp and both a French dispatch postmark from Ollioules (Var) and a New York receiving cancel dated November 24, 1903, making it a complete transatlantic postal artifact of considerable charm.
