Postcard 1910s Colmar Alsace Schwendibrunnen Kaufhaus Germany Unused

Colmar, Alsace (then German Reichsland Elsaß-Lothringen)1915Pre-linenGood

In the storied courtyard of Colmar's medieval Koifhus — the ancient customs house whose diamond-patterned polychrome roof tiles are one of Alsace's most recognizable sights — the bronze Schwendibrunnen fountain rises on its column, its warrior figure surveying the arcaded gallery and half-timbered stair tower that have guarded this trading heart of the city since the fifteenth century. This sepia real-photograph-style card, captioned in German as "Colmar i. E." (im Elsass — in Alsace), dates to the period of German administration of the Reichsland Elsaß-Lothringen, before the region's return to France after World War I in 1918, lending it the particular historical resonance of a place caught between two national identities. The unused card is printed on sturdy stock with a clean divided back numbered 15 29273, suggesting a German or German-Alsatian publisher of the mid-1910s era.
