Postcard 1908 Biarritz Hotel du Palais Rocks Seascape France Used Austria

Biarritz, France1908Pre-linenGood

From the wild Atlantic edge of France, waves crash against the dramatic Roche du Basta as the grand Hôtel du Palais-Biarritz looms in the middle distance — a view that distills the glamour and raw power of this storied Basque resort town. Sent on 24 August 1908, this card carries a farewell from a traveler named Pauly to a young woman named Rosa in the lakeside Austrian village of Seeboden am Millstättersee, Carinthia. Written in warm German, Pauly announces a departure the next morning via Bordeaux and Orléans to Paris, and then homeward — "Nun geht es aber der Heimat zu" ("Now at last we head toward home"). The Hôtel du Palais itself has a storied past: built on the site of Napoleon III's Villa Eugénie, it became one of Europe's grandest seaside palaces. The postmark from Biarritz Basses-Pyrénées is crisp, and the card bears a French Semeuse 50c red stamp, making this a charming triple-interest item: scenic, philatelic, and epistolary.
