Antique & Vintage Postcards

Behind a theatrical swag of draped fabric, an entire winter world unfolds in miniature — snow-laden fir trees, a medieval hilltop fortress, a village church, half-timbered houses, and tiny skiers on a slope, all rendered with extraordinary craft in this real-photo postcard documenting a "mechanische Bastlerschau" (mechanical hobbyists' exhibition) from the Erzgebirge tradition displayed at Bad Reichenhall, Kirchberg Nr. 1. The Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) region on the German-Czech border has been the heartland of intricate hand-carved Christmas folk art and mechanical dioramas for centuries — a living tradition that UNESCO recognized in 2023. This RPPC captures one such display as a theatrical stage set, the deckled white border and real-photo silver-gelatin surface confirming its authenticity as a photographic card rather than a lithograph. The back is entirely unused, with a standard interwar German postcard format and deckled edge consistent with late 1930s production.
