Postcard 1900 Geneva Switzerland Pont et Quai du Mont-Blanc Real Photo Charnaux

Geneva, Switzerland1901Pre-linenGood

Shot from a commanding elevated vantage, this strikingly clear real-photograph postcard surveys Geneva's iconic Pont du Mont-Blanc stretching across the Rhône outlet of Lake Geneva, the Île Rousseau visible to the left and the grand hotel façades of the Quai du Mont-Blanc marching along the right bank — all beneath the snow-capped ridgeline of the Salève massif. Published by Charnaux Frères & Cie (no. 649), the city's premier photographic house active from the 1860s, this undivided-back card belongs to the earliest stratum of Swiss picture-postcard production. Horse-drawn vehicles and period pedestrians animate the bridge, offering a documentary glimpse of Geneva's Belle Époque waterfront before the automobile transformed it. The back carries three languages only — French, German, Italian — plus the "Nur für die Adresse" instruction, consistent with Swiss PTT undivided-back regulations in force c.1898–1904.
