Postcard 1905 St-Quay-Portrieux Villa Jeanne d'Arc Brittany France Pre-Linen

St-Quay-Portrieux, France1905Pre-linenGood

A grand Breton seaside institution rises from a screen of dense shrubbery in this evocative early-twentieth-century view — the Villa "Jeanne d'Arc" at St-Quay-Portrieux, a handsome mansard-roofed residential hotel of four storeys, its ranks of shuttered windows and corner pavilions speaking to the robust Norman-Breton architectural tradition favored by Catholic holiday establishments along the Côtes-d'Armor. St-Quay-Portrieux was already a fashionable summer destination when this card was printed, and houses like Villa Jeanne d'Arc catered to bourgeois Parisian families seeking sea air; the building's L-shaped plan and steep slate roof are characteristic of the region's late-nineteenth-century institutional architecture. The reverse is a pristine undivided-or-early-divided blank, published by the Nantes house of J. Nozais — a prolific regional editor whose numbered views of Brittany and the Loire-Atlantique are keenly collected today. Card number 39 places this in a substantial series documenting the town.
