Jugend Magazine 1910 Nr.34 Munich German Art Nouveau Jugendstil Willibald Krain

Munich, Germany1910Pre-linenFair

A striking survivor from the golden age of German Jugendstil — issue Nr. 34 of Jugend, the Munich art-and-culture weekly that gave the entire Art Nouveau movement its German name, dated with editorial close of 16 August 1910. The back cover bears a commanding full-page political cartoon by Munich artist Willibald Krain — "Weh! Das ist Ferrers Geist!" ("Woe! That is Ferrer's Ghost!") — depicting the spectral figure of Francisco Ferrer Guardia, the Catalan anarchist educator executed by Spain in October 1909, rising enormous and ethereal above cowering clerical figures dragging chains; the image crackles with anticlerical fury that was deeply characteristic of liberal German intellectual culture in the Wilhelmine era. The inside front color plate is a luminous, richly rendered painting of a seated woman in a black bodice and shimmering silk skirt surrounded by patterned fabrics — an image of extraordinary tonal sophistication. Together, the pieces represent Jugend at its most politically engaged and aesthetically ambitious. The publication was edited by Dr. Georg Hirth and featured contributors including v. Ostini, Sinzheimer, Matthäl, Langheinrich, and Ettlinger.
