Postcard 1960s Wien Vienna Paulusstube Restaurant Chrome Austria Herta Harmer

Vienna (Wien), Austria1965ChromeExcellent

A four-panel promotional chrome postcard from one of Vienna's most atmospheric Old-Town restaurant pairs — Herta's "Paulusstube" on Walfischgasse and the adjoining "Zum Weissen Rauchfangkehrer" (The White Chimney Sweep) on Weihburggasse — captures the warm, wood-paneled, tartan-tableclothed gemütlichkeit that defined mid-century Viennese restaurant culture at its most deliberately folkloric. Each quadrant reveals a different dining room: the Paulusstube with its painted green doors and bentwood chairs; a corner nook hung with antlers, painted panels, and a grandfather clock; a lantern-lit passage room where portraits of stern gentlemen watch over checkered placemats; and a candlelit booth enclosed by carved wooden screens. The card served as a business promotional piece, with the reverse carrying full contact details including telephone numbers "52 81 36" and "52 34 71" — Vienna's pre-digit-expansion exchange format — and a "Porto verbilligt!" (postage reduced) Drucksache franking notice, meaning it could be mailed at the cheaper printed-matter rate. A crisp, unused example in near-excellent condition with the characteristic wavy-cut border of Austrian promotional cards of the era.
